WHY IS NY THE PERFECT CITY FOR FASHION WEEK?
They are four main fashion cities in the world, Paris, London, Milan and New York, which are known for dictating fashion trends for all over the world.
Without a doubt NY is one, if not the most important. You can’t think of NY without relating it with fashion, it has some of the best design and fashion schools in the world, tons of modeling agencies and the biggest magazines enterprises of the world, just to name a few of this huge industry.
The New York Fashion Week, now branded Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is held in February and September of each year on the Lincoln center in NY City.
In 1943 was The first New York Fashion Week, then called Press Week, was the world's first organized fashion week. The event was designed to attract attention away from the French fashion during World War II. It wasn’t easy to access French fashion, so the fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized an event she called "Press Week" to showcase American designers who had previously neglected and not recognized for their innovations.
Press Week was a success, and fashion magazines like Vogue, which were normally filled with French designs, start featuring American fashion, which was a huge step.
In 1994, the event was moved to its former site in Bryant Park where it was held inside a series of large white tents in the almost cover the entire block. Due to increasing pressure from Bryant Park management, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was changed to the Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for the first time in September 2010 and has been held there ever since.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is perhaps the most well known event held during New York Fashion Week, but not the only one. Many top-name designers show their collections at other venues, including Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs.
But I think everyone would agree with me that there is no other city on the US that would be better suited than NY for being a fashion capital. Everyone that wants to become someone in fashion wouldn’t hesitate to go and accomplish his or her dream on the big apple. It’s one of the most exiting places on earth; it makes you feel that you can become whomever you want.
